Jim Nicholson, BBTR PresidentHello Big Bear Trail Riders,
If you weren't part of the sixty two riders that went to the Bar 10 Ranch last weekend, you missed a great ride. The weather was great, cool and comfortable temperatures and blue sky.
Kevin Glassett took a group of about 30 plus riders with gas and snacks on the trail. Jimmy Nicholson took about 10 riders and did some extra exploring finding some new trails for next year. Dan Yuknavage came to the start and got everyone off to a good start with GPS downloading. Dan could not ride it this year with the group, although Dan and I and Jackie with the chase truck rode it two weeks before just to check the course for any rain damage to be aware of but found it to be just perfect for riding. This was a great family outing because a lot of wives and kids rode this year. Several riders were quite young, seven and eight year olds riding XR50's and they all finished. In particularly my seven year old son Brandon and thirteen year old grandson Kyle that had to ride 120 miles since I got turned around and did a few extra miles by accident. It's amazing what kids can do if you take them out riding and teach them, they impressed me. They are our future motorcyclist.
We had hors d'oeuvre and drinks after arriving to the Bar 10 Ranch on Saturday afternoon that was brought by my wife Jackie and Kevin Glassett. Some riders opted to ride to the rim of the Grand Canyon before Saturday night dinner to take pictures and watch the sunset, an unbelievable sight. Dinner was excellent like always, even warmed up some food for us (the lost group) that didn't get in until after seven o'clock with my sons Brandon and Jimmy, grandson Kyle, brother in law Miguel and friend Bob Morris.
After dinner we relaxed around the patio for some bench racing then the Bar 10 Ranch workers put on a little western hospitality show for us. They told some jokes, sang some country songs, made up a volunteer band with kids from our group and put on a slide show about the history of the Bar 10 Ranch which was very interesting.
One of our members Russ Starck, it was his mothers birthday (she rode in the truck with Russ' wife Valerie) and the Bar 10 workers again out did themselves by surprising her and us with a birthday cake that they baked just for us and we all joined in to sing her Happy Birthday.
Lights went out at 10:00 p.m. and a good nights rest for all. Some slept in the lodge and some chose to sleep in the covered wagons. The following morning breakfast was at 7:00 am pancakes, eggs, bacon, juice and coffee yum yum. Some riders went to the rim of the Grand Canyon after breakfast for pictures and a scenic look of the Colorado River and canyon walls, again what an incredible sight to see. Tracy Payne's daughter Jessie had an accident going down to the rim and thought she broke her leg so Jackie drove down in our truck to get her. Devon Morris and Steve Payne rode the bikes back up to the ranch. Well good news I was informed that she didn't break her leg but bruised it really good. She was more upset that she would not be able to dance at her prom the following weekend but she will be okay.
We arrived back to Mesquite around four o'clock Sunday afternoon. Some riders came in and just packed up and headed for home. A bigger group than I thought stayed until Monday and like us we stayed around for a few hours to bench race some more, eat pizza in a hotel room while the kids swam and then we all took showers and drove home. Good times and good ending to another successful Bar 10 Ride year.
Thank you to all that came on the ride and all the people who helped especially Valerie Starck who carried most of the gear bags for the riders and to my wife Jackie who carried the rest of the gear bags, gas and food for us all to enjoy.
Happy trails --
Thank you,
Jim Nicholson
